Baroque
Baroque art is notably from Germany of the latter decades of the sixteenth century. It desired to evoke great emotions from its viewers. Grandeur, sensuous richness, drama, vitality, movement, tension, emotional exuberance and a tendency to blur distinctions between the various arts were key elements in this era. Baroque art has continuous overlapping of figures and elements. Counter reformations, absolute monarchies, and new interest in nature influenced artist in this time period. the Papacy used Baroque style as propoganda in response to the reformation. Common themes in baroque style are grandiose visions, conversions, martyrdom, and death and used intense lighting.
The Company of captain Frans Banning Cocq and lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch preparing to march out, commonly called night watch, was painted by Rembrandt. Painted in 1642, Rembrandt uses lighting and shadow to portray the interest of exploration.
